What Is GEO?
Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) is the practice of optimizing your content to appear in AI-generated answers — think Google's AI Overviews, ChatGPT, Perplexity, and similar tools. While traditional SEO focuses on ranking in a list of blue links, GEO is about being cited or summarized by an AI.
The shift is significant. More and more searches now end without a click. The AI answers the question directly. If your content isn't structured for that, you're invisible.
Why It Matters Now
Search behavior is changing fast. AI-powered answers are eating into organic traffic for informational queries. Businesses that optimize early will dominate the AI answers. Those that don't will watch their traffic erode slowly — and won't understand why.
GEO isn't replacing SEO. It's layering on top of it. The fundamentals — quality content, clear structure, authoritative sources — still apply. But the emphasis shifts.
3 Practical GEO Tips
1. Answer questions directly and early. AI models are trained to extract concise answers. If your page buries the answer three scrolls deep, it won't be cited. State the answer clearly in the first paragraph, then expand.
2. Use structured data. Schema markup helps AI systems understand what your content is about. Article, FAQ, HowTo, and Product schemas are particularly useful. If you're not using structured data yet, start now.
3. Build topical authority, not just keyword coverage. AI models prefer sources that demonstrate deep expertise on a topic. One comprehensive, well-sourced article beats ten shallow posts targeting long-tail keywords. Write like the expert you are — and back it up with real depth.
GEO is early. The playbook isn't fully written yet. But the window to get ahead of it is open right now.
